Understanding PPD Testing

PPD testing, also known as the Tuberculin Skin Test (TST), is a screening method used to detect tuberculosis (TB) infection. Tuberculosis is a potentially serious infectious disease that primarily affects the lungs. At Lavender Urgent Care & Wellness, we offer reliable and accurate PPD testing to help diagnose TB infections early.

Why PPD Testing is Important

Early detection of tuberculosis is crucial for effective treatment and preventing the spread of the infection. PPD testing is especially important for individuals at higher risk of TB exposure, including Urgent Care workers, individuals with weakened immune systems, and those who have been in close contact with someone diagnosed with TB.

What to Expect During PPD Testing

Administration:

  • A small amount of purified protein derivative (PPD) is injected just under the skin of your forearm.
  • The injection site will form a small, pale bump, indicating that the test has been administered correctly.

Monitoring:

  • After 48 to 72 hours, you will need to return to Lavender Urgent Care & Wellness for the test site to be examined.
  • A Urgent Care provider will check for any reaction at the injection site, such as swelling or redness.

Results:

  • Negative Result: No significant swelling or redness at the injection site, indicating that TB infection is unlikely.
  • Positive Result: A raised, hard area or significant redness at the injection site, suggesting a possible TB infection. Further testing, such as a chest X-ray or sputum test, may be required to confirm the diagnosis.
