The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued an emergency use authorization (EUA) for Merck’s Molnupiravir for treating mild-to-moderate COVID-19 in adults with positive SARS-CoV-2 test results who are at high risk for progressing to severe COVID-19, including hospitalization or death, and for whom alternative treatment options are not accessible or clinically appropriate. Molnupiravir is available by prescription only and should be initiated as soon as possible after diagnosis and within five days of symptom onset.
Molnupiravir is not authorized for use in patients under 18 years old as it may affect bone and cartilage growth. It is also not authorized for pre-exposure or post-exposure prevention of COVID-19 or for starting treatment in hospitalized patients. Molnupiravir works by introducing errors into the virus’s genetic code, preventing further replication. The medication is administered as four 200-milligram capsules taken orally every 12 hours for five days, totaling 40 capsules. It is not authorized for use for longer than five consecutive days.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued an emergency use authorization (EUA) for Pfizer’s Paxlovid (nirmatrelvir and ritonavir tablets, co-packaged for oral use) for treating mild-to-moderate COVID-19 in adults and pediatric patients (12 years and older, weighing at least 40 kilograms or about 88 pounds) with positive SARS-CoV-2 test results who are at high risk for progressing to severe COVID-19, including hospitalization or death. Paxlovid is available by prescription only and should be initiated as soon as possible after diagnosis and within five days of symptom onset.
Paxlovid consists of nirmatrelvir, which inhibits a SARS-CoV-2 protein to stop the virus from replicating, and ritonavir, which slows nirmatrelvir’s breakdown to maintain higher concentrations in the body. Paxlovid is administered as three tablets (two nirmatrelvir and one ritonavir) taken together orally twice daily for five days, totaling 30 tablets. It is not authorized for use for longer than five consecutive days.
COVID-19 treatment is available at our Sarasota location every day from 8 am to 8 pm. Schedule your appointment today. For any additional questions or concerns, please contact us at (941) 364-4379.

Urgent care is for medical conditions that require prompt attention but do not pose an immediate threat to your health or life. Here is a simple rule of thumb: if your medical issues(s) are life threatening, call 911, or go directly to a hospital emergency room. If not, an urgent care center such as Lavender is an excellent alternative.
